Hairloss Causes and Prevention

Loosing hair is very prevalent among men and devastating for women. Hair is a person’s crown and glory, just to see most of it to fall off is very alarming. There have been speculations how this happen and what the body goes through when it does. Many cultural groups have their own beliefs regarding hair loss and concoct their own remedy for the problem. But when dealing with something so sensitive, we must always get the best advice from people that have extensive knowledge in the field. It is best to gain factual and real information on how the process really works and what measures can be made to prevent it.

Hairloss have many causes, and it is classified further according to gender. In both male and female, common origins of the problem are hair hygiene practices and maintenance. Some use chemicals on their hair that destroys the follicles and produce scarring on the scalp. Hair will not grow on these places and continuous scarring will ultimately decrease hair volume. Medical treatments can also result in hairloss like surgery, medication or chemotherapy in cancer patients. However, the thinning of hair from using chemotherapy agents is usually reversed months after discontinuation of the drug regimen. Stress is also considered a factor. Studies show that high percentage of those who experience severe hairloss have classified themselves as moderately to severely stressed individuals. These are just some of the common reasons that people of different gender looses hair from their scalp.

In men, the number one cause of hair fall would be androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. It is the thinning of the uppermost portion of the head which can start near the forehead, usually called receding hairline; or from the vertex, commonly termed as a bald spot. Baldness in men is genetically linked, and survey shows that around 60% of all males in the world experience mild to severe hairloss.  The genes that induce baldness are localized in the X chromosome, making it a maternally linked trait. Mothers that possess the genes are likely to pass down the trait to their male children. In some cases, too much free testosterone radicals in the body has been associated with early baldness, in which studies are done with male subjects ranging from ages 20 to 30 years old. Men experiencing baldness can sometimes feel helpless and embarrassed with their situation. They try any means possible to reduce and even reverse the process.

Treatment will depend on the individual’s case. Male pattern baldness is counteracted with topical and oral medicines such as finasteride and minoxidil. Health and hair habits are also addressed. Too much pulling of hair in females can cause injury to the scalp and needs to be avoided. Using harsh chemicals for hair treatment must be limited if possible. Younger males produce free testosterone radicals which increase in levels with lack of exercise. Aerobics and other non weight bearing exercises have shown to decrease these levels by producing more sex hormone binding-globulin or SHBG. Too much cholesterol or fats in the liver hinders production of SHBG. Having a healthy and balanced diet will prevent this, as well as other health problems. A good word from your doctor regarding caring for your hair and body will come a long way in battling hairloss.
